This was one of the scariest books I read as a child, growing up in the UK. It was set during World War II in Wales and involved evacuees, a weird, little (eventually lovable) mentally handicapped man named Johnny, a skull and a fire....... tried to get my own boys to read it years and years later and they were all freaked out by the idea of the secret skull. It did come out as an excellent BBC tv movie recently and we all watched it and enjoyed the story together. Skulls and all!
